Optimize your site for search engines

You can help users find your content by following these tips for search engine optimization (SEO).

Keep each page's content focused. The content for each page should stay close to that page's main topic. If the content strays too far, that's a sign the content belongs on another page or a new page needs to be created.

Write a good page description. The page description appears in Google results under the link. It's your chance to convince the user to click the link. Tell the user what he or she will find on the page—you can even refer to the user as “you”—but limit the description to 150 characters, including spaces. Google cuts off descriptions at that point.

Incorporate keywords. Before you write, take a few minutes to think about the topic of your page. Then choose two to three words or phrases that represent the content and how users might search for it. These are your keywords and keyphrases, a critical component of SEO.

Use keywords:

  • In the Keywords field, separated by commas
  • In headings
  • In links
  • In the content

You might also want to think about incorporating some synonyms or phrases that are similar to your keywords and keyphrases into the content. Using variety in the way you write about your subject shows search engines that you are knowledgeable about the topic.

Write naturally. If your content sounds like a robot wrote it, search engines will assume you're just trying to draw traffic. Focus on writing well. Good content is well-optimized content.

Write plainly. Remember, people tend to skim content on the web. If you use long, convoluted sentences full of big words, you will lose the majority of your readers, and your search engine results will suffer.
